Renewable Energy

Raincloud is supporting the energy transition in the UK

Overview

Raincloud provides comprehensive expertise across the full lifecycle of energy and renewable projects. We support our clients from the earliest stages of opportunity identification and feasibility assessment, through planning, permitting and construction monitoring. Our work spans the full low-carbon energy spectrum, including solar, wind, battery storage, hydrogen, and grid infrastructure. We understand the complexity of delivering sustainable energy projects in today’s regulatory and environmental landscape.

Raincloud’s expertise including providing technical hydrology support for Planning Application, Town and Country Planning Act (England and Scotland), Development Consents Orders (DCO) for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NCIPs) (England) and Section 36 Consents (Scotland).

We’re proud to partner with those driving the UK’s energy transition—whether through large-scale renewables, innovative grid technologies or enabling infrastructure.

Our Services include:

  • Feasibility and site selection - identifying viable sites through flood and drainage feasibility studies

  • Design - helping clients optimise their site’s layout for a successful planning application through constraints mapping, drainage layouts and mitigation design

  • Scoping and Planning - author succinct Scoping Reports, delivering high standard Flood Risk Assessments, Sustainable Drainage Strategies and Environmental Chapters for Planning and Environmental Impact Assessments

  • Discharge of Planning Conditions - Working with clients to meet the regulators requirements

  • Permitting and Consents - guiding clients through the consents and permitting process

  • Construction - monitoring water quality pre and during construction

Delivered over 10 GW of renewable energy projects in the UK

Solar PV

Our expertise in solar energy projects is extensive from small scale solar farms to some of the largest Development Consent Order (DCO) solar farms in the country. Feasibility, planning and construction, Raincloud can provide hydrological services to meet your projects demands, from flood risk, sustainable drainage systems and Environmental Impact Assessment.

Hydropower

Raincloud can provide flow analysis for your Hydro scheme. We use hydrological modelling tools such as LowFlows 2 and flow duration analysis to assess flood risk for hydropower projects, enabling accurate feasibility, safer designs, and robust regulatory consent in UK watercourses., at an early stage to assist in the viability of Hydro schemes. Our staff have strong track records in providing EIA services for small-scale and run-of-river Hydro schemes.

Onshore Wind

Raincloud have and continue to provide hydrological services on a vast number of onshore wind farms. Our expertise support clients who are planning on submitting Section 36 consents (Scotland) through the production of an EIA hydrology chapter and supporting appendices.

Hydrogen

Raincloud have a strong track record in helping clients deliver Blue and Green Hydrogen projects, including providing EIA Chapters, Flood Risk Assessments and Flood Warning Plans.

Battery Energy Storage Systems

Raincloud have extensive experience of providing high quality SuDS Strategies, Flood Risk Assessments and Fire Water Strategies for standalone and co-located BESS sites.

Alternatives Energy Solutions

From Anaerobic Digestion to Carbon Capture and Storage, Raincloud can provide the hydrological services the project requires to navigate the planning process.
